Facelift is a general term applied to diverse procedures to elevate the facial structures and tighten the facial skin, with the main objective of reducing wrinkles and giving an overall more youthful appearance.
The bony structure of the face, heredity factors and cutaneous texture all play important roles in the final outcome of the rhytidectomy.
The ‘face lift’ usually involves the area of the neck, ‘jowls’ or sagging skin of the jaw area, cheeks, perioral (area round the mouth), periorbital (area around the eyes) and forehead.
Sometimes the adjustment of the area of the forehead and eyebrows must be done as separate procedures depending upon the existing skin turgor (or laxity).
Face lift incisions are made on the inside of the hairline, through the existing skin folds in front of the ears, continuing behind the ear and following the natural hairline. In many instances, the incisions are extended through subcutaneous tissues and into the muscular tissue. Flaccid muscles of the face are then sutured and “tightened”, as are the layers of skin and subcutaneous tissue. This gives the entire face an overall “firmer” appearance.
Following surgery, there is normally quite a bit of swelling and bruising, sensation of facial tenseness and possibly some sponginess of some areas of the face and neck. Within two to four weeks, these sensations will dissipate and the bruising will heal. Most of the scarring will be hidden within the natural hairline and normal skin folds around the ears. Scars behind the ears can be easily hidden with an appropriate hairstyle.
The patient should not expect to be able to wash or brush hair for quite some time…some surgeons advise waiting at least one month. It is also usually recommended that the patient avoid sun exposure and to use sunscreen and hydrating lotions to keep the skin moist.
It is no longer advised that a patient wait until 60 to 70 years of age before undergoing rhytidectomy. In fact, many surgeons recommend getting “mini- face lifts” starting as early as the 40’s.
Good results are much easier to achieve and maintain if smaller procedures are performed as “preventative measures”, before the face looses muscular turgor and the skin becomes thin and flaccid. It is much easier to maintain a youthful appearance than it is to regain a youthful appearance!
In expert hands, complications resulting from this procedure are very few and mostly transitory, i.e. hematomas, defects of healing, cutaneous injuries, loss of hair at scar areas, altered motility of eyebrows or lips, numbness, tingling and loss of sensation in the face, as well as local infection of the incision lines. Risks associated with the procedure are statistically rare, and are widely compensated by the positive result of the surgery.
Plastic surgery has historically been viewed as an exclusive and costly service only the rich and famous could afford to pursue. Not anymore.
With even the most dramatic and promising cosmetic surgery procedures becoming safer, more common and far less complicated than ever as well as a growing inventory of options now available for financing plastic surgery of all forms is becoming an increasingly popular life-enhancement choice for the middle class.
